Do You Need to Replace Your Water Heater?
Home /
Water heaters are one of those appliances that many homeowners take for granted, not thinking much about them until they have a problem. And it’s true that water heaters are reliable devices that last a long time. But this is only if they’re cared for and maintained properly. It’s important to remember that even the best cared for water heater will eventually need to be replaced. But how do you know when it’s time?
Your Water Heater Is Aging
Generally speaking, water heaters can easily last a decade if they are taken care of. If your water heater is over 10 years old, you’ll want to think about the risks you face should your system break down or start leaking due to its age. Is your aging tank in a location that will cause damage to your home if a leak occurs? This can be a good enough reason alone to consider replacement.
The Water Is Rusty
Have you discovered rusty water coming from the hot side piping in your home? If it’s coming from the faucets regardless if you’re getting hot or cold water, then you have a plumbing problem. However, rusty water only from the hot side is indicative of your water heater rusting away on the inside.
You Hear Odd Noises
As your water heater ages, sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank. This sediment is heated and reheated continually, causing it to harden. Once this happens, you’ll likely hear rumbling or banging sounds coming from your hot water tank. This is a clear sign that your water heater is near the end of its lifespan.
You’ve Found Water around the Water Heater
Moisture around your tank may be indicative of a leak or a fracture in your tank. As metal heats, it expands. So if there is even a slight fracture in your system then water can leak from the tank. This may be the sign of loose fittings, but it’s best to have a professional take a look, as they may recommend replacement.
